The UK is introducing new rules for subscription contracts (the DMCC Act, in force from January 2027). One of their core ideas is a cooling-off period: after a trial turns into a paid subscription, or after a contract of 12 months or longer renews, the subscriber gets 14 days to change their mind and receive a refund. On stores based in the United Kingdom, the app tracks these windows for you. Stores based anywhere else are not affected: nothing described here runs for them.
A 14-day window opens automatically after a successful charge in two cases: a trial conversion (the first charge at the full price, when the plan started with cheaper introductory cycles) and a long-term renewal (a renewal of a subscription billed every 12 months or more). Ordinary monthly renewals do not open a window. This works on both billing engines: card renewals through Shopify and Mollie SEPA direct debit.
When a window opens, the app sends the Cooling-off notice email: a short message that the subscriber has 14 days to change their mind, with a button to their customer portal. The template lives under Settings → Notifications, where you can edit the wording or switch it off like any other notification.
If the subscriber cancels within the 14 days, the subscription page in the app shows a banner: cancelled within the cooling-off window, consider refunding the last renewal. When the charge behind the window is known, the banner shows the amount and a Refund last renewal button: one click refunds that renewal in full (through Shopify for card payments, through Mollie for SEPA). The refund never happens on its own: it is always your click.
Partial refunds or deductions (for example for returned goods) are yours to handle through the normal Shopify refund screen.
The exact notice wording the UK rules will require is not published yet; the current email is a plain-language version you can edit any time.
Nothing here is legal advice: check the final rules with your advisor once the secondary legislation is out.
