The upcoming order reminder is an email the app sends to a customer before a renewal is charged, naming the amount and the date. It works on both billing engines: card renewals through Shopify and Mollie SEPA direct debit. It is off on every store until you set a lead time, so nothing is sent on your behalf without your say.
Go to Settings → Notifications and click the Upcoming order reminder row under Customer notifications. The switch on the row must be on: a disabled template sends no reminders regardless of the timing below.
Days before the payment decides how far ahead the reminder goes out. It takes a whole number of days, up to 30. Any value above 0 turns reminders on; setting it back to 0 switches them off. Each renewal gets one reminder: the app checks once a day and sends it on the first check that falls inside the window you chose.
For SEPA direct debit, 14 days is the usual choice: the customer should know the amount and the date in advance, so they can check their balance or act before the debit. For card renewals there is no such expectation and a few days is plenty, but one setting covers both, so pick the value that fits how your customers pay.
The subject and the intro message are yours to write, with variables from the Available variables card. The default subject is "Your subscription renews on {{next_billing_date}}", and {{order_total}} puts the amount of the upcoming charge into the text. The preview on the right renders the email as you type, and Send test delivers a copy to your store email.
New UK rules for subscription contracts (the DMCC Act) come into force in January 2027, and renewal reminders are one of their core ideas: a subscriber should be told before money is taken. The exact requirements are still being written in secondary legislation, but reminders are set to become standard practice, so UK stores benefit from turning them on well before then.
