Subscription tags put subscription state on the Shopify records you already work with. They drive customer segments, fulfillment rules, Shopify Flow conditions and Klaviyo profile filters, and they are switched on from the moment you install the app.
Go to Settings → Subscription tags. It is a tab of Settings rather than an automation you build: the rules are seeded for every store at install, they are store-wide, and they change no subscription. You get one card per event, each with a Tag order and a Tag customer side.
First order: runs on every new subscription contract, including subscriptions you import.
Recurring order: runs after a successful subscription billing attempt.
Failed payment: runs after a failed subscription billing attempt.
Cancelled and Paused: run when the contract is cancelled or paused.
Prepaid: runs only when the billing and delivery policies differ.
Add-on: runs when an add-on is billed with the order.
Retention saved: runs when a customer accepts a retention offer.
Every event adds the tag "Progus Subscription" plus one naming the event, for example "Progus Subscription First Order". Customers are tagged on all eight events. Tag order is ticked by default on five: first order, recurring order, failed payment, prepaid and add-on.
Failed payment is the one to watch. A failed billing attempt never produces an order, so its order rule never lands and "Progus Subscription Failed Payment" only appears on the customer. Build your segments and Flow rules on the customer tag.
Type your own comma-separated values in Order tags or Customer tags, untick a side you do not want, and save. Reset puts one event back to its defaults. An enabled rule must have at least one tag. Editing these rules needs a paid plan, Growth or higher; the default tags are applied either way. On Free the fields still look editable, and only the save is refused, with an error that does not say why.
Order tags are only added when the event has an order, so a pause or a cancellation never tags one. And tags are only ever added: when a paused subscription resumes, the paused tag stays until you remove it.
Five of the events tag Mollie subscriptions as well: first order, recurring order, cancelled, paused and retention saved. Three behave differently. Prepaid and add-on never fire there, because both read a Shopify subscription contract that a Mollie subscription does not have. Failed payment tags the order only, and only once, when the retries are exhausted, where a card subscription is tagged on every failed attempt.
Use the tags in Shopify Flow. See Build workflows with Shopify Flow.
For flow triggers in email or SMS, use events instead. See Send subscription events to Klaviyo.
